December Newsletter by Pat Prather

Coordinators and Administrators

Happy Holidays Everyone! As 2012 starts to fade into 2013, we need to thank those voters who helped stem the tide of financial hardship that all California schools have endured over the past few years. Be assured that CAWS will continue the fight to procure funds for our IB schools, and achieve better recognition for the IB Programmes in California. We are working in both these areas.

Oct. 30 and 31 several members of CAWS, Bob Poole from IBA, and Capitol Advisors Lobbyist Group went to Sacramento to meet with state legislators, UC, CSU, and Community Colleges. Our goal was to further build relationships with key policymakers and promote policies that enhance International Baccalaureate in California. We definitely accomplished this goal and were able to develop key next steps for CAWS moving into 2013.

Nov 1, your CAWS Board President, Robin Oliver, during a ceremony at Glen Wilson High School, presented a plaque to Senator Ed Hernandez in recognition of his efforts to foster and increase the growth of the IB in California to all students.

There is no shortage of next step opportunities as a result of these positive meetings. You can help your CAWS Board and Capitol Advisors Group by meeting with administrators at your local university campuses, and establishing relationships with your legislators. Invite them to your school and let them see the IB in action.

ALTERNATIVE PATHWAYS

Have any other districts followed up on the strategy of accepting the IB Diploma as meeting CA graduation standards? Desert Sands has adopted that policy. I would like to hear from any schools or districts that are pursuing this pathway.

ROUNDTABLES

The Cakebread Wineries in Napa are hosting a PYP roundtable January 16th.sponsored by Mt George International School. The IB Core will be the topic for the day. The agenda and registration forms are on the CAWS website.

NAME/E-MAIL CHANGES

Thank you to those Coordinators who call or e-mail me with name and e-mail changes for their Coordinators or Heads of Schools. We want the website which lists all authorized CA IB schools to be accurate and we also want our database to be correct so that all information goes to the correct person. Please let me know of any changes at your school.

MISCELLANEOUS ANNOUNCEMENTS

1. On December 10th, the International Baccalaureate Organization is co-sponsoring an event with the Washington Post focused on leadership in international education. The event will be held at the Washington Post headquarters in DC and will bring together 200 movers and shakers in the educational field (including members of the State and Education Departments, foreign ambassadors, academics, CEOs, and journalists). The book, Journeys in Learning Across Frontiers, will be given to each and every one of them, as a display of the power of international education.

2. IBO is pleased to announce the roll-out of its four new programme models.

These models have been created to illustrate the coherence across the four IB programmes and highlight each programme’s unique elements. The design is no longer hexagonal but circular, illustrating the alignment of structure and terminology across all four programmes and a seamless, holistic and integrated continuum of education for children aged 3-19 years old. The new models continue to be built around the learner profile, with an underpinning theme of international-mindedness. Approaches to teaching and learning are now embedded within all four programmes, which are further aligned by each one culminating in a learning experience. More information and details of how the changes affect each programme is available on the OCC and via the public website. https://www.ibo.org/communications/schools/downloads/curriculummodels.cfm

3. In June your CAWS board decided to commit to going more “green”. This means that I will no longer do mailings of documents in August and December to schools each year. It costs the association more money each mailing, and I am never sure if Coordinators and Heads of Schools receive the packets. Plus it will help the environment. From now on, all documents, advisories, and miscellaneous information will be placed on the website which is really the case now anyway. It is therefore very important that you check the website regularly to obtain the latest news, dates of events, materials to download etc.
